After buying Rome Total War five years ago and playing it to death, I finally decided to play online. However, I have no idea where my CD Key went in all that time. I tried all those methods involving the registry editor (regedit-HKEY Current user- Software- TheCreativeAssembly.) but it doesn't show up as promised.     the cd-key is registered to the steam account it was first installed on. I am unsure if Steam can unregister the game from the old account and put it on the new account, try their tech support or ask for a refund.

    to make it clear, STEAM only games require a special CD key. Once this Key is used, it won't work again. From the moment the CD key is tied to a steam account, the CD key becomes invalid for anyone else to use.
    On one side, it prevents people from installing the game (logically) on multiple accounts.
    On the other side, yes you can get robbed like this.
    Contact the one who sold you the key and demand your money back. The guy who sold you this shouldve darn well known you cant use a Activated CD key on Steam twice.'
    I hope you get your money back.
    I do like to add a tip based on this experience. NEVER, especially in these times when games get sold more often on Steam, buy a USED CD key. The used CD key couldve been activated on Steam.

    If you bought a used copy then it is not legitimate. A used Steam game is by definition not able to be played at all because the key has already been registered. Whoever you bought it from ripped you off.

    Corrected action is the most sincere form of apology.

    You can always use the cd key if you install it offline (given you own a hard copy). The problem is you can't play the game online.
    Tough luck on you, I hope you find a way to get another cd key but it's unlikely.. There isn't much support when it comes to this even if they can easily blacklist the lost key and give you a new one..

    Hope that you get your money back. Now you atleast know that used steam game can't be reused.
    At the end of the day, if someone cares enough to come and post on the forums, it doesn't matter if the post is good or bad, it means that Total War is something really important to them, so I don't take it personaly.

    You can't install the game in offline mode. Therefor you can't install it.
