While Encrypting a File with a Password from the Command Line using OpenSSLis very useful in its own right, the real power of the OpenSSL library is itsability to support the use of public key cryptograph for encrypting orvalidating data in an unattended manner (where the password is not required toencrypt) is done with public keys.
This article discusses how to generate an unencrypted private key and public certificate pair that is suitable for use with HTTPS, FTPS, and the administrative port for EFT Server. (To generate an encrypted key/certificate pair, refer to Generating an Encrypted Private Key and Self-Signed Public Certificate.). Generate online private and public key for ssh, putty, github, bitbucket Save both of keys on your computer (text file, dropbox, evernote etc)!!! The generated keys are RANDOM and CAN'T be restored. Online x509 Certificate Generator. Create self-signed certificates, certificate signing requests (CSR), or a root certificate authority. Featuring support for multiple subject alternative names, multiple common names, x509 v3 extensions, RSA and elliptic curve cryptography. OpenSSL commands are shown so they can be run securely offline. Online x509 Certificate Generator. CertificateTools.com offers the quickest and easiest way to create self-signed certificates, certificate signing requests (CSR), or create a root certificate authority and use it to sign other x509 certificates. We support multiple subject alternative names, multiple common names, all x509 v3 extensions, RSA and elliptic curve cryptography private keys. Generating the Public Key - Windows 1. At the command prompt, type the following: openssl rsa -in rsa.private -out rsa.public -pubout -outform PEM 2. The public key is saved in a file named rsa.public located in the same folder. Generating the Private Key - Linux 1. Open the Terminal. Navigate to the folder with the ListManager directory.
The Commands to Run
Generate a 2048 bit RSA Key
You can generate a public and private RSA key pair like this:
openssl genrsa -des3 -out private.pem 2048
That generates a 2048-bit RSA key pair, encrypts them with a password you provideand writes them to a file. You need to next extract the public key file. You willuse this, for instance, on your web server to encrypt content so that it canonly be read with the private key.
Export the RSA Public Key to a File
This is a command that is
openssl rsa -in private.pem -outform PEM -pubout -out public.pem
The -pubout
flag is really important. Be sure to include it.
Next open the public.pem
and ensure that it starts with-----BEGIN PUBLIC KEY-----
. This is how you know that this file is thepublic key of the pair and not a private key.
To check the file from the command line you can use the less
command, like this:
less public.pem
Do Not Run This, it Exports the Private Key
A previous version of the post gave this example in error.
openssl rsa -in private.pem -out private_unencrypted.pem -outform PEM
The error is that the -pubout
was dropped from the end of the command. That changes the meaning of the command from that of exporting the public keyto exporting the private key outside of its encrypted wrapper. Inspecting theoutput file, in this case private_unencrypted.pem
clearly shows that the keyis a RSA private key as it starts with -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
.
Visually Inspect Your Key Files
It is important to visually inspect you private and public key files to makesure that they are what you expect. OpenSSL will clearly explain the nature ofthe key block with a -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
or -----BEGIN PUBLIC KEY-----
.
You can use less to inspect each of your two files in turn:
less private.pem
to verify that it starts with a-----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
less public.pem
to verify that it starts with a-----BEGIN PUBLIC KEY-----
The next section shows a full example of what each key file should look like.
The Generated Key Files
The generated files are base64-encoded encryption keys in plain text format. If you select a password for your private key, its file will be encrypted withyour password. Be sure to remember this password or the key pair becomes useless.
The private.pem file looks something like this:
The public key, public.pem, file looks like:
Protecting Your Keys
Depending on the nature of the information you will protect, it’s important tokeep the private key backed up and secret. The public key can be distributedanywhere or embedded in your web application scripts, such as in your PHP,Ruby, or other scripts. Again, backup your keys!

Remember, if the key goes away the data encrypted to it is gone. Keeping aprinted copy of the key material in a sealed envelope in a bank safety depositbox is a good way to protect important keys against loss due to fire or harddrive failure.
Oh, and one last thing.
If you, dear reader, were planning any funny business with the private key that I have just published here. Know that they were made especially for this series of blog posts. I do not use them for anything else.

RSA(Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) is an Asymmetric encryption technique that uses two different keys as public and private keys to perform the encryption and decryption. With RSA, you can encrypt sensitive information with a public key and a matching private key is used to decrypt the encrypted message. Asymmetric encryption is mostly used when there are 2 different endpoints are involved such as VPN client and server, SSH, etc.
Below is an online tool to perform RSA encryption and decryption as a RSA calculator.
For Java implementation of RSA, you can follow this article.
First, we require public and private keys for RSA encryption and decryption. Hence, below is the tool to generate RSA key online. It generates RSA public key as well as the private key of size 512 bit, 1024 bit, 2048 bit, 3072 bit and 4096 bit with Base64 encoded.
By default, the private key is generated in PKCS#8 format and the public key is generated in X.509 format.

Below is the tool for encryption and decryption. Either you can use the public/private keys generated above or supply your own public/private keys.
Any private or public key value that you enter or we generate is not stored on this site, this tool is provided via an HTTPS URL to ensure that private keys cannot be stolen.
This tool provides flexibility for RSA encrypt with public key as well as private key along with RSA decrypt with public or private key.

In the first section of this tool, you can generate public or private keys. To do so, select the RSA key size among 515, 1024, 2048 and 4096 bit click on the button. This will generate the keys for you.
For encryption and decryption, enter the plain text and supply the key. As the encryption can be done using both the keys, you need to tell the tool about the key type that you have supplied with the help of radio button. By default, public key is selected. Then, you can use the cipher type to be used for the encryption. The different cipger options are RSA, RSA/ECB/PKCS1Padding and RSA/ECB/OAEPWithSHA-1AndMGF1Padding. Now, once you click the encrypt button the encrypted result will be shown in the textarea just below the button.
Remember, the encrypted result is by default base64 encoded.
Similarly, for decryption the process is same. Bfme 1 cd key generator. Here, you need to enter the RSA encrypted text and the result will be a plain-text. You have both options to decrypt the encryption with public and private keys.
